Leon Potter is very active as a local coordinator....I hope he may chime in too, but
And I personally have prepared returns in VITA sites in the past for at least 5 consequetive years...

I can say from personal experience that folks that volunteer are frequently retired CPA's and accountants(as AARP sponsors both VITA and TCE programs) that like to stay in practice and stay current.

Both programs are partnered with the IRS and State Revenue for training. The training is robust and specific.

New volunteers get over 40 hours of training offerred in a 1 week solid 40 or 3-4 weekends 16 hours each weekend.

Return volunteers get annual 16 hour refreshing training...

Site coordinators get more training too....

No one gets a shift helping folks w/o training. Additionally, they have very specific parameters for what returns the handle....and only do simple ones...

The United Way of Pinal County sponsors the VITA program in Pinal County. In Maricopa, the UWoPC and the City of Maricopa, in partnership, are able to make the service available to the community. The commitment the volunteers make BEFORE tax season is vital to the success of the program during tax season.  They have training on the tax laws and the software. The scenarios are challenging.

The volunteers are knowledgeable, and most important, IRS certified to prepare returns to the public as volunteers.

Please contact Viola at the number above if you have any questions and would like to make an appointment.
