Onionzilla
« on: 17 May 2011, 08:13:39 »

We have been growing a herd of onions for a few years now. It is great being able to walk out back anytime you need a spicy onion. This year they are all flowering. I am pretty much a city boy so this is the first time seeing an onion flower. The name comes from the fact that these onions are 4-5 feet tall now.

Are those onions or scallions - the green stalks that you chop up to season things.  I love those things and we buy them all the time.  The problem is that we use a couple and the rest go bad in the fridge.  It would be great to have a little patch of them so that we could pull up a fresh one on demand.

Ah, now you have me wanting to try these things.  One of my projects in waiting is to set Mrs. DD up with a raised garden.  We have to get whatever we're growing above the ground because whatever the chickens don't get the rabbits and squirrels will.  Are these growing year round?

Yes those are 2.5 to 3 years old. We have been using them like a green onion while they were small, but now those tall ones are getting large bulbs on them. We have them in a raised container as well to keep dog pee off them. I litterally planted them on top of each other to where it almost looked like grass when they were small. This stategy may be why they are doing so well against heat/cold.

Make it DEEP. We bought one of the walmart kits on clearance. Then I built a stand for it to be about 36" high. The soil isn't deep enough to keep much alive once summer hits.

I like to use the plastic storage tubs, which are about 18-24 inches deep.  Drill a few holes in the bottom for drainage or use a couple of inches of gravel.  Fill them with potting soil and you're ready to rock and roll.  A good stand can be made with cinder block and 2x4s.  If you use the clear ones, you can see the roots.

OoOoO! Ice started a little pot garden this year. Not much, but a start to play around with. He buried pots in the ground and ran a drip line to them. The pots aren't big enough for much, though. I'll have to keep the storage containers in mind. Hadn't thought of that.

and here I was confused all day as to why he dug holes and buried pots in the ground. Why not just place plant in the ground? I got it now. ::)

Pots 1) have better soil than the standard Arizona ground and 2) hold water.
Pot is not grown in our pots.
