Copa News Article

Did anyone else read the letter to the editor from a parent whose daughter received a report card of three A's and two F's from MUSD high school and the daughter does not attend MUSD and never has.  She wrote a letter to our superintendent and never received a reply.

Wow.
I do have children who attend MUDS schools. One is a straight A student, and the other is the lower grade equivalent of a straight A student (ABC grades don't being until 3rd grade). I absolutely believe you get out of an education what you put into it, but I think I'd be questioning the teachers as much as my daughters if they had 3 A's and 2 F's. Something very strange there.

I'd be questioning that there was a report card at all if my child didn't attend school in the district.

Yeah, you're both right.  I am curious as to how there's an academic record for a child who didn't attend a school.  One possible explanation is that someone is using her identity.  If she turns out to be a candidate for Stanford, those two F grades are going to be an issue for the admittance board whether she earned them or not.

Now, for a child who did earn three A grades and failed two classes completely, the only possible explanation is that she didn't attend two of the classes at all.  Any child motivated enough to excel in three classes isn't going to completely fail two others.

Wow.  Now I never suspected that the possibility of someone inflating the enrollment numbers.  How do they come up with an actual name and address of an actual student.  I am assuming that the student is of the appropriate age to be attending high school as the letter didn't say otherwise, just that they had never enrolled or applied.  Since the teacher didn't have anyone by that name in their classroom, it looks like there are two possible causes:

1.  Gross incompetence, or
2.  Enrollment fraud

If there is another reason that I haven't thought of, maybe the school district, or the public relations firm that they hired to polish their image, can address the question.

I'm curious about one part of that letter.  The parent says that one of the teachers contacted her back regarding the fact that the student is not on her roster, but then the parent claims that the teacher still gave her daughter an A.  Is she sure the teacher gave that grade?  How does she know that? Especially since the teacher didn't even know who the student was.

It seems more likely that those grades weren't given by individual teachers at all, but that the grades were part of whatever error caused the progress report to be sent out.  I will be interested to find out if they get to the bottom of this.

Was the student ever enrolled in the district?  If so, they would have all of that info - elementary school records are maintained for several years.  Just because the child was never enrolled in the high school does not mean the child was never enrolled in the district.
