School me on Catholic hospitals please..
« on: 28 February 2011, 18:02:57 »
Not on everything,  just on a couple things about childbirth..

My wife and I are expecting our first child in September. Neither of us are, nor have we ever been religious.  We aren't OPPOSED to it, however neither of us were raised to be and at this time in our lives have no desire to be, and I'll just leave it at that.

I understand that there are many questions that we need to ask the doctor directly, but I'm hoping for some general education on the topic.
My wife's OB/GYN is Dr. Matthews working out of Goodman and Partridge's office. Looking at their website's "about" section, it says she attends Chandler Regional.  I've heard good things about this hospital, however since it's also a Catholic hospital I am concerned about a couple of things:

If there is a complication during childbirth and it comes down to my wife or the baby's life, will they let my wife die in order to save the baby?  Also, my wife would like to get her tubes tied after the baby is born, will they do it?

Not ready to make any hasty decisions yet, but I'm just beginning to wonder if we should start looking for another doctor or hospital before it's too late.

I don't know anything about that hospital. I do know it was a risky situation when they induced my son's labor a month early at Banner on Dobson. Apparently they have one of the highest birth counts in the valley through there. So they have experience and specialists on site. It went great, I would think you would need to wait a while to tie tubes after birth.

Chandler Regional is owned by Catholics, but they do not follow the church rules when it comes to things like that.  They make the medically correct decision, not the religiously correct one.

my littlest was born at chandler. i'm also not a religious person. not once was a whisper of religion mentioned to me. they didn't even ask if i'd like a priest to visit, as i've known to happen at other hospitals.

chandler regional ob ward rocked. the staff was awesome. you have nothing to worry about.

oh and PS, yes. the hospital will allow her tubes tied, IF the doctor will consent. with this being your first child, you might have trouble convincing the doc. her age would come into play, also. if you have difficulties finding a doctor to tie them, tell her to get an IUD for birth control. no pills to remember, no shots to endure. they're idiot proof and good for up to 10yrs (although i've known people to keep theirs longer).

Cool, thanks.  Unless there's a medical reason, I doubt they'd have a problem with it since we're both 36 and have been together for over 20 years.

yea, 36 should be cool. last time i had any first hand info on tube tying, i'd had to sign a release 30+ days ahead of time. however, this was 7yrs ago and a different state. check with her doc, tho.

I have been to both Chandler and Mercy Gilbert, which are owned by Catholic Healthcare West .  The medical care was great.  Religion was never mentioned.  They are a little more expensive than other hospitals but everything I saw there was new and sate of the art.  They will pursue any bill that you owe them to the end of the earth - they have their own collection agency.

I wouldn't worry.  If there is a concern, I would ask the physician up front how he would resolve the situation.  My guess is that he would opt for what is medically necessary.

I've had 2 of my girls at Chandler and 1 at Mercy Gilbert.  I prefer Mercy hands down.  However, Mercy Gilbert is a true Catholic hosptial where they will not allow tubals to be preformed there, Chandler will.  My dr said that if you end up with an emergency c-section at Mercy there is absolutly no way to have the tubal done.  Also they won't preform the tubal until about 6 weeks postpartum if she delivers normally.  I did end up having the Essure procedure that is preformed in the office, but it was nice to know my choices going in.

Mercy Gilbert is a "Catholic Hospital" while Chandler Regional is just Catholic-owned.

You'd better hush your mouth!  Some of us depend on that tubal!  lol.

I also had Goodman & Partridge docs. I delivered my 1st at Mercy and my 2nd at Mountain Vista. They did tell me (before I knew where I was going to deliver for sure on the 2nd one) that Mercy wouldn't do the tubal. That's why I chose Mountain Vista. I was 29 and on my 2nd child and they allowed the tubal without a fight. They did ask me EVERY time I went into my prenatal visits if I was still sure, but I was. And they would always tell me that I could stop them at ANY time before the procedure was done...even if I was on the table...lol. And I did have it done when I had my scheduled c-section with my 2nd.  And until RR said the above, I felt safe with just that. Now I will go and make an appt. for DH to get snipped. ha ha ha.

I liked both places, but Mountain Vista was brand new 3 years ago and didn't have a lot of the bells and whistles that Mercy had.

Badeye - I really have nothing of value to add. I just wanted to say congratulations. Please research today's IUD's. I had one numerous years ago and it caused a complete hysterectomy. I almost died. That being said, things are much better nowadays when it comes to such things. Just educate yourself.
The best to you and your growing family.
