Hitting Tip for Parents who don't know crap about baseball
« on: 08 February 2011, 21:58:45 »
I guess sometimes I wish I had a son so I could take him to the park and teach him all the fundamentals of baseball.  Parents don't realize there are so many important mechanics of baseball, they simply think its hit and catch a ball.  So here's an important tip for proper power

Koko,

As a baseball player and as a little league coach for 10 years it is my experience that too many kids have their "hitting" skills coached out of them by parents who think there is only way to do something.

Do you ever wonder why there are so many hitting styles in the major leagues?  Same with pitch delivery.  It is because there are many ways to be mechanically sound.

First the skill of hitting something with a bat or club, or throwing a ball or a rock has long been ingrained and developed in our bodies through evolution.  Humans have been doing this for 1000's of years.  It is a natural thing and the best thing to do is look at what a kid has success with naturally then develope that.

"Squishing the bug" works well for some kids but it is better first to develop eye hand co-ordination then go from there.  A kid who can't strike a ball in flight sucessfully will benefit very little from "squishing the bug" and will be fast become frustrated and not want to play.  On the other hand a kid who does have good eye-hand skills, fast hands but little power may very well benefit from a hip turn.

Thanks for the tip though.  I just caution against reconstructing a batter just because someone thinks it is the "proper mechanics".

The pivot of your hitting foot and  explosing of your waist is a standard teaching method and nothing out of scope.  Now even though I agree with you about hand & eye coordination being more important the next proper fundamental is to pivot, open your hips, and swing down at an angle

Now, of course everyone has their unique style of ball, but the rotation of your hips as a batter or pitcher is a basic fundamental that is critical.

This video demostrates your soft toss drill

I remember my pops feeding me soft drills afterwork at the park,  however I would hit the ball into the backstop at close range so we didn't have to go shag the balls after we downed a bucket.

Man, I hope you don't wear these type of shorts on the ball field, but soft toss I think is the best way to develop hand eye coordination

The best way to teach a kid hitting is to use a batting tee.  Once they master hitting off a tee, try a light under hand toss about 20-feet away so they can understand ball flight.  Once they master that, throw over hand so they understand tracking the ball.  Then use a spring release machine to simulate the pitch from the proper distance.

THEN do soft toss.

Once you master that, give your kid a broom stick handle and buy a big-ass bag of pinto beans at Wal Mart and teach them to hit the bean.  It focus on the occular muscles of the eye and trains the aspiring hitter to focus on the core of the ball so as they move up in skill level, they can effectively hit a curve ball, changeup, slider, splitty or any other type of pitch.  Once you train a hitters eye, you can hit anything.

Ricky, the best lead off hitter in the game, would warm up using a batting tee. Yes Ricky did! LMAO.
