Amber, see what you are saying.. but I can not hurt someone having myself or my own family wearing or not wearing a floatie in my pool.. I can however hurt someone else, by myself or people in my vehicle not wearing a seatbelt.. get into a horrific accident bodies flying crashing into others.. hurting many more lives..
We have laws in place for a reason... you can chose to obey, you can chose not to.. that IS your choice you must accept the consequences for not doing so is all.
Believe me, I have been in a very, very bad accident. I was told, I would not have survived had I not had my seatbelt on.. I was also told that my passenger would have died regardless.. luckily my friend who was supposed to go home with me had to work late.. otherwise she may not be here today.. so yes, you can have both things happen.. but without one on, you can cause others to be injured or worse, killed for your choice.. but that is your choice.

Should I get a ticket because I did not have my belt on when I got pulled over...NO
Should I be at fault because I had the choice to ware one and did not...YES
Would I still ask my insurance that is covered by others...people like me that chose to wear the belt...?
Cover your fault??

I also see your point Snooze. DH was in a very bad motorcycle crash on the freeway when he was younger (WAYYY before we met)...only thing that saved his life was the helmet. And I am thankful that he CHOOSE to wear it (because it was not law he didn't HAVE to). So I get what you're saying. And common sense would tell you that if you have someone in the vehicle with you that you could possibly injure during a crash, you should wear your seat belt. And I would (law or not) as I wouldn't be able to live with myself if something happened to someone else because of me. But that having the government require a seat belt...without question, all the time, infringes upon my right as a human being to decide what i want to do with my own body when it DOESN'T involve the life of anyone else.

The reason there are mandatory seat belt laws are insurance companies. They want to minimize their risk wherever possible. They have a tremendous lobby and make large campaign contributions, both of which are financed by the premiums you pay.
Excessively low speed limits, photo radar, red light cameras, cell phone restrictions, super-tough DUI laws, 18 airbags in a vehicle (all paid for by you) - thank your local insurance company.
So what if you could go to the dealer and instead of paying $22K for a car, order one without air bags and pay only $12K? Shouldn't that be your choice?
Try letting your insurance lapse sometime, or change insurance companies and not tell the DMV, and see how long it takes for the DMV to cancel your registration.
Oh, and mandatory insurance? Yes. They even lobbied the legislature to force you to buy their product.

It's only mandatory insurance if you are legal. And can prove who you are and where you live, if not you are free to go.

on the topic of seatbelts, i know this guy (pokes Ice) who rolled a car end over end a FEW times. he wasn't wearing a seat belt. neither were his two brothers in the car with him. it was a two door car. the one in the back got bounced around the car and a lot of bruises. the two in the front seats weren't so lucky. they were both ejected. broken bones, concussions, multiple stitches, but amazingly survived. they shouldn't have. this guy's mother could've lost 3/4 of her children just cause a couple of teenage boys were being stupid and fracking off. how's that for your personal actions, or lack of actions, affecting others? don't be so damn selfish as to think that by not clicking that belt, you're only putting risk to yourself. image losing 3/4 of your children in a second. imagine your children losing you. AND, this dumb ass guy (pokes Ice. again.) just might have been driving in front of his friend. and this friend just might've had to swallow her heart back down after watching a car with her best friend driving roll end over end a FEW times through a field. this friend just might've became a total basket case when, thanks to before mentioned concussion, this best friend DIDN'T EVEN FREAKIN' KNOW WHO SHE WAS WHEN SHE RAN TO HIM IN THE FIELD!!! buckle your belts, people.

I believe in mandatory seat belt laws for minors.. other than that, game on.. take your chances.. same with helmet laws.. if you are stupid enough to ride without one, Darwin will take care of you..
There's no insurance lobbyist that would convince me that a few "survivors" on lifetime life support is more expensive than the dumbass non-helmet-wearing person dying is cheaper..

i have a great vision of susan in floaties. shakes head. lol Again, I said do what you want.. but just know you can be risking others.. not just the passengers in your vehicle.. I'm talking other vehicles, people in those vehicles.. one body flying thru the air crashing into another car, or in the road to be run over by another driver.. not my choice.. but that is just me.. I understand your point Amber, I really do.. but again, like I said there are many, many laws that people don't agree with... abide, don't abide.. up to you.
