Just in case you wanted to know...
« on: 16 June 2010, 10:06:24 »
There is a link now to find Desert Dwellers current location, based off of APRS data from his HAM radio.

We are evaluating several solutions using this, as it would be a good tool, not only to stalk poor Steve, but when they go offroading to see their last known location to get help there quicker if need be.

I just noticed the link. I get a page not found error, even from the address root.

What Up?

The site must have been down when I tried it. It came up fine today for me.

It should be working much better now.  I upgraded the transceiver to a Kenwood D710 - the granddaddy of APRS rigs.  It has ten times the power output of the one I was using and it is the same transceiver used on the International Space Station.  It looks like this:

It will update every sixty seconds now since I don't have to worry about AA batteries.  You can also track past days on the web site and see my route from any day the unit was in service.  It also shows speed and direction.

From what I see, it says it was last updated over 4 hours ago and shows a map, but no DD icon to show where on that map you are.

A better site is aprs.fi

Key in my callsign and the number of hours to display.  It will show my trip to Phoenix this morning.  You can also show previous days.

Ssshh!  Mrs. DD reads these threads.  I loaned the car out to some co-workers - that must be where they went.  :)
